The Stabbed Tomato

It was a dark and stormy night. Four adults sat among antique furniture and priceless china in an elegant living room. As they chatted, two restless boys, both under the age of ten, roamed the rest of the house looking for ways to amuse themselves. During a pause in the conversation, the hostess rose and went to the kitchen to fetch more tea. When she returned she held, not tea, but a gorgeous hot house tomato that had been brutally stabbed with the kitchen shears. “Who did this?” she inquired angrily, barely able to control her rage. “Boys?” the unfortunate mother of the wandering children called out. The youngest appeared immediately, as if he had been lingering nearby in anticipation of this moment. “Did you stab Nana’s tomato with the scissors?” “Yes,” he replied, “because you wouldn’t let me play the piano and I’m bored. “Go apologize to Nana at once.” The mother ordered sternly. The little boy, a plucky five year old, walked bravely in to kitchen where his seething Nana had retired. “I’m sorry Nana,” he said sincerely. “No!” Nana screamed, "this boy should be punished!”

Although the mother had sympathy for the tomato, and indeed, a high regard for all vegetables except the lowly parsnip, she disagreed sharply with her hostess. Much shouting ensued between the two. The mother’s discipline tactics were called into question, and this was not the first time she had been criticized on this matter. This concerns the mother. Is she too soft on her boys? Does she need to use harsher punishments? Should she buy Nana a new tomato and then tell her where to stuff it?
